Adult Foster Care & Homes for the Aged
Adult Foster Care (AFC) is an option of care whose hallmark is that of a small "family" setting for up to a limited number of individuals. State regulations govern the maximum number of individuals who may reside within an Adult Foster Care setting. In Michigan, an Adult Foster Care Home is restricted to serving no more than 20 adults at any one time. Adult Foster Care facilities offer personal care assistance with eating, bathing, dressing and grooming. The facilities also provide medication management as well as general supervision on a 24-hour basis. In Michigan, Adult Foster Care homes serve individuals who have developmental disabilities, mental illness, physical handicaps and/or who are simply aged and cannot live alone, yet do not need continuous nursing care.

A Home for the Aged (HFA) provides 24 hour room, board, and supervised personal care to 21 or more unrelated individuals 60 years of age or older. A Home for the Aged also provide personal care assistance with eating, bathing, dressing and grooming. The facilities also provide medication management as well as general supervision on a 24-hour basis.

The distinctions between these two care settings is as follows. Homes for the Aged are restricted to assisting only individuals over age 60. Adult Foster Care homes are restricted by license to serving no more than 20 individuals, regardless of age, at any given time.

Both AFC and HFA’s provide care to persons who are or have mental illnesses, physical disabilities, and/or Alzheimer’s Disease or related Dementia disorders. Payment for assistance in either of these settings may come from private pay resources or Medicaid.
