How can Mediation help?
What's in it for me?
If you are involved in a dispute or potential legal problem, mediation can offer you an alternative to legal, court, or administrative agency appeal procedures. Mediation is:
- FAST - Most mediation sessions are scheduled within ten days of both parties agreement to mediate and often last no more than two hours.
- CONFIDENTIAL - Mediation is kept private, not a matter of public record as are court proceedings.
- INFORMAL - No formal language or attire is required.
- VOLUNTARY - Parties are not forced to reach an agreement.
- EFFECTIVE - It works! In 80% of the cases, parties reach an agreement.
How do I get involved if I choose to try mediation?
If you live in Delta, Menominee, or Schoolcraft counties, community mediation is available through the Conflict Resolution Services Program of UPCAP Services Inc.
An intake worker from the office will talk with you and take down the basic information regarding your problem or concern. This information is kept strictly private. The intake worker will also answer any questions about the process.
Persons may also be referred from the courts, police, churches, schools, or social services agencies. We will take care of contacting the second party to the dispute to obtain their consent to mediation. If both sides agree, the mediation session is scheduled.
